Kalihi Valley

Extends from the Koʻolau Range crest through Kamehameha Schools to Likelike Highway. Includes Kalihi Valley, Kalihi Uka, and the upper valley residential areas.

Overview

Kalihi Valley is an older, lived-in residential valley that runs mauka from the urban Kalihi corridor toward the Koʻolau side, with daily life shaped by schools, public housing, small local services, parks, streams, and steep green edges. The neighborhood board discussions show a community with many multigenerational households, renters, kūpuna, families with school-age children, and residents who rely on nearby public facilities like Kalihi Valley District Park and local health and social-service organizations.

What's unique

What stands out about Kalihi Valley is how strongly residents frame the area as an ahupuaʻa, not just a housing market. Board discussions regularly connect traffic, schools, streams, mountain hazards, food distribution, youth programs, and disaster planning into one larger picture of place. The Kalihi Ahupuaʻa Ride, youth bicycle work through K-Vibe, Kokua Kalihi Valley’s resilience and accessibility projects, and talk of community hubs all point to a neighborhood where civic and cultural stewardship are active parts of community life.

What residents are talking about

The most consistent concern is street safety, especially on Kalihi Street. Residents repeatedly raise speeding, unsafe crossings, missing sidewalks mauka of Nalaniʻehā, parked cars forcing pedestrians into the road, and frustration that enforcement or design changes have not fully addressed the problem. Parking is another major issue: weekend sports and pool activities crowd Kalihi Valley District Park, residential parking permit rules are contentious, and residents complain that overcrowded rentals and too many cars strain narrow neighborhood streets.
