Overview
Kalihi-Pālama is an older urban Honolulu district with residential blocks, public housing, schools, small businesses, and industrial corridors close together. Daily life is practical and busy: people are dealing with school traffic, bus and walking routes, construction detours, local stores and services, and the constant presence of major roads such as Dillingham Boulevard, Kalihi Street, North King Street, and the H-1 corridor.
What's unique
What stands out here is how closely neighborhood life is tied to public infrastructure and civic advocacy. HART rail work, planned Mokuea and Kūwili station design discussions, H-1 widening, Gulick overpass work, bus access, sidewalk gaps, and ADA compliance are not abstract issues; they affect how residents get to school, work, stores, and appointments.
What residents are talking about
The most repeated concerns are safety, traffic, and the condition of public space. HPD reports regularly include assaults, auto thefts, burglaries, thefts, car break-ins, and thousands of calls for service in the broader Kalihi area, and residents have repeatedly raised illegal game rooms, slow response concerns, nuisance activity near 901 Gulick Avenue, loitering, loud noise, public drinking, public urination, illegal parking, and after-hours problems. Homeless-related issues also come up in the context of school routes, pedestrian bridges, and family safety.
