Diamond Head-Kapahulu-St. Louis

Encompasses Diamond Head crater through Ala Wai Boulevard. Includes St. Louis Heights, Kapahulu, and the Diamond Head residential areas.

Overview

Diamond Head-Kapahulu-St. Louis covers several different daily rhythms in one board area: the residential streets around Diamond Head, the busier Kapahulu side near Kapiʻolani Park and the Ala Wai, and the hillside streets of St. Louis Heights. It is a neighborhood where park use, beach access, campus activity, older residential streets, and major commuter routes all overlap.

What's unique

What distinguishes this area is how many public-land and transportation decisions converge here. Kapiʻolani Park trust lands, Diamond Head State Monument, Ala Wai Golf Course, Kapahulu Avenue, Date Street, Leʻahi Avenue, and the routes around Kaimukī and Waikīkī all come up repeatedly in board discussions, so residents are often weighing neighborhood livability against islandwide demands for parks, ocean safety facilities, buses, events, and visitor movement.

What residents are talking about

The most consistent concern is traffic and street safety. Residents raise Kapahulu congestion, missing or ignored crosswalks, speeding on steep St. Louis Heights streets such as Alencastre and Bertram, illegal parking and blocked driveways near Oswald Street and St. Louis Drive, delivery trucks blocking narrow side streets, and construction-related parking from the Kūilei Place project. City Complete Streets work on Date Street and discussions about bus routes, the Ala Wai bridge, a possible Ala Wai ferry, and a proposed Kapahulu mobility hub all show that transportation changes are active here, but not universally welcomed.
